Plantar Warts
About Plantar Warts
Plantar warts, also known as verrucas, are a common foot condition caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). While they are generally harmless, they can be painful and discomforting. Understanding the causes and symptoms related to plantar warts can help individuals manage this condition effectively.
Causes
Plantar warts are caused by HPV, a contagious virus that enters the skin through small cuts or breaks. The virus thrives in warm, moist environments, such as locker rooms, swimming pool areas, and communal showers. Common sources of infection include direct contact with the virus or walking barefoot in areas where it is prevalent.

Symptoms
Wart Appearance: Plantar warts often have a distinctive appearance. They are small, grainy, and usually have a rough surface. Warts may appear alone or in clusters, and they are typically found on the soles of the feet.
Pain and Discomfort: Plantar warts can be painful, especially when pressure is applied to them while walking or standing. This discomfort is due to the wart growing inward, beneath the skin’s surface.
Black Dots: Some plantar warts may develop tiny black dots within them, which are small, clotted blood vessels. These dots are often referred to as “wart seeds.”
