About Toenail Surgery

Toenail surgery, also known as toenail surgery or nail avulsion, is a medical procedure designed to address various nail problems and provide relief to individuals suffering from pain, infection, or deformities in their toenails. It is a specialized branch of podiatric medicine that involves the surgical removal or correction of toenail issues that cannot be resolved through conservative treatments. In this article, we will explore the different types of toe nail surgeries, their indications, and what to expect during the recovery process.

Common Toenail Problems Requiring Surgery

Ingrown Toenails: Ingrown toenails occur when the edges of the nail grow into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, and sometimes infection. Surgery may be necessary if conservative measures, like soaking the foot and keeping the area clean, do not resolve the issue.

Fungal Infections: Severe fungal infections of the toenails (onychomycosis) can lead to thickened, discolored, and brittle nails. While there are non-surgical treatments available, toenail surgery may be considered for cases that do not respond to other therapies.

Trauma: Injuries to the toenail, such as a subungual hematoma (blood collecting under the nail), may require surgical intervention to relieve pressure and drain the blood.
