Ingrown Toenails

Causes, Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention

Ingrown toenails are a common foot ailment that can cause significant discomfort and pain. While often considered a minor issue, neglecting ingrown toenails can lead to more severe complications. See below about the causes, symptoms, treatment, and prevention of ingrown toenails to help you better understand this condition and take the necessary steps for optimal foot health.

Causes

Ingrown toenails occur when the edge of a toenail grows into the skin surrounding it. Several factors contribute to the development of ingrown toenails:

Improper Nail Trimming

The most common cause of ingrown toenails is cutting nails too short or rounding the edges instead of trimming them straight across. This encourages the nail to grow into the skin.

Footwear

Tight-fitting shoes or high heels that compress the toes can exert pressure on the toenails, increasing the risk of ingrowth.

Trauma

Stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object on it can damage the nail and lead to ingrown edges.

Genetics

Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to ingrown toenails due to the shape of their toenails or the structure of their toes.

Poor Foot Hygiene

Inadequate foot hygiene can contribute to ingrown toenails, as it may lead to infection or inflammation around the nails.

Symptoms

The symptoms of an ingrown toenail can range from mild to severe and may include:

Pain: The affected area can be tender and painful to the touch.

Redness: The skin around the ingrown toenail may become swollen and red.

Swelling: Inflammation and swelling can occur, making it difficult to wear shoes comfortably.

Infection: If left untreated, ingrown toenails can become infected, leading to pus drainage, increased pain, and a foul odor.

Treatment and Prevention

The treatment of ingrown toenails consists of minor surgical procedures, generally under local anesthesia, for its removal. Prevention of the recurrence is provided by your doctor through specific healthy foot care instructions.
